A mini-guide for Pelion and its stunning beaches!!

Pelion in Greece is an ideal place to visit during summer and winter!

You might have seen Pelion beaches without even knowing about it! Mamma Mia movie shot here and some scenes come from the beach Damouchari.

Pelion area has fantastic landscapes and offers beautiful views!

Pelion remains wonderful all year round and is suitable for all kinds of activities, like hiking, trekking on horseback and cycling and ecotourism while providing the necessary infrastructure to accommodate a large volume of tourists.

At the end of the post, we will present the best beaches with photos and a detailed map so you can locate them easily!

Where is Pelion and how to get there?

Mount Pelion or Pilio in Magnesia rises up from the city of Volos and stretches across the Pelion peninsula with the Pagasitikos Gulf on one side and the Aegean Sea on the other. In Greek mythology, the mountain was the summer residence of the gods and home of the Centaurs!

You can rent a car and visit quite easily as it is around 3.30 hours from Athens and 2.30 – 3′ from Thessaloniki airport. In addition, it is very close to Volos, which has a small airport with a few international flights.

Also, there are buses that depart from Liossion KTEL Bus Station to Volos  (5 hours) or from Thessaloniki: Buses from Thessaloniki to Volos depart from Macedonia KTEL Bus Station. (3 hours) KTEL buses connect to various villages. Find more about bus schedule information here.

#get the train

Pelion railway is a 600 mm narrow gauge railway line – one of the narrowest in the world!- connecting the city of Volos with the town of Milies on Pelion. The train normally operates from spring till autumn. During this period one cyclical trip is made in the mountainous part of the line, which is the only segment currently in operation! Hiking can be one of the highlights during your stay in the area! There are a number of different paths that you can select and enjoy the amazing nature! If you are a nature lover then don’t miss the chance to hike this beautiful mountain.

#try the local food

I might not be very objective when it comes to Greek food as I a huge fan but I think everybody that has already visited the area agrees that the food there is simply amazing! Not sure if it is because of the local products or the love that the people about food. If you are going to visit Pelion, then you can try fasolada (bean soup), rabbit stew and cheese bread. But my favourites are below:

  • Kapamá, which is Stuffed lamb with different and local greens, rice and herbs and it is oven cooked for 3-4 hours.
  • Boubári is a roasted sausage and it is stuffed mutton sausage with rice, minced meat, greens and herbs and oven cooked with potatoes.
  • Spetzofai, the most famous Pelion food, which is normally a spicy dish with peppers, sausage cooked in tomato sauce. Simple and delicious!
  • Try also the most famous fruit of Pelion area which is fyriki, a type of small apple that is cultivated in the villages of Pelion. You can find also as a spoon sweet!

#explore some islands!

You can combine Pelion with some of Sporades islands, like Skiathos, (find our mini travel guide about the island here!) Skopelos, Alonissos and do some island hopping! Why not? You can read the detailed post about Greek Island Hopping!

There is a connection from Volos port and you check the ferry itineraries on Ferryscanner platform. But, let’s focus for now on the Pelion summertime side and Pelion beaches!

#Stay on lovely villages and beautiful resorts

Pelion has some beautiful villages, where you can find your ideal accommodation. We can check our detailed post about the best hotels in Pelion here!

Beaches

1. Mylopotamos

Beach of unparalleled beauty with golden sand and natural protection from the sun, from the giant rock which is also offered for climbing purposes… enjoy as you wish!

2. Agioi Saranta

For those who like to discover secret places, this beach will definitely cover your need for isolation. Green-Blue clear water combined with a landscape almost inaccessible gives isolation from prying eyes.

3. Chorefto

This beach seems could be on an exotic beach in Caribbean, but luckily you don’t need to travel that far!

4. Parisena & 5. Analipsi

The ones that have come prepared, very close to Chorefto there are two hidden beaches. They create a landscape that the green of the trees meets the turquoise of the sea. The rough, big rocks seem to lie in the water, jagged from the waves and the winds of the Aegean Sea!

6. Agios Ioannis

Agios Ioannis Pelion beaches

This is probably the most famous beach in Pelion. It has well-developed facilities and nature there is fantastic!

7. Damouchari

Damouchari Pelion Beaches

This is the famous beach from Mama Mia movie. You will get very relaxed by the greenery surroundings. Just take into account that it has some large pebbled in case you find them a little bit inconvenient.

  1. A few days in Thessaloniki or Athens, via a visit to the clifftop monasteries of Meteora, makes for an excellent road trip. Or you can take a boat to Skiathos for some Greek island hopping.
